Drawing with DEBT

DEBT coming over is always fun. He's a little strange, and doesn't hang around long. So fun drawing sessions like this one is always super fun!

Projects for today

Yesterday I watched the movie Boys and Girls guide to getting it down. This along with a recent Suicide Girls book I stole from HIP's house have lead to these new SLUTS ARE SEXY images.

Getting ready for the Murals For Zora opening.

Started working on the flyer.
MURALS TO ZORA
Andy Shallal is inviting local artists to paint murals in his new restaurant, Eatonville. The mission of this event is to bring diverse local talent together to create art. Almost, the entire restaurant is serving as a blank canvas! All local artists are welcomed to paint a mural in commemoration to Zora Neale Hurston and her hometown of Eatonville. The restaurant is inspired by Eatonville, the first all-black town to incorporate in America and the childhood home of Zora Neale Hurston, the most famous female writer of the Harlem Renaissance.
The mural event will begin Wednesday Feb. 25th-26th from 4pm-11pm. On Saturday Feb. 28th, there will be an Opening Party for the Murals (art, music, and lots of fun) to be seen by press and public. During this time participating artists are welcome to have their own artwork on display. On Sunday Feb. 29th 10am-4pm the space will be open to the public to view the murals. These murals will be the back drop for the opening restaurant but it is not guaranteed that every mural will be up permanently.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
WEDNESDAY FEB. 25th 4pm-11pm, MURAL PAINTING
THURSDAY FEB 26th 4pm-11pm, MURAL PAINTING

LIFEGUARD pics

The painting read- All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my mother. A quote from Abe Lincoln that I've frequently used.

Thank you to Philippa P.B. Hughes for putting the event on, and Richard Chu for the photos.

LOVE LETTERS

BOOKISH LADY is one of my favorite artist in DC. She makes the most special prints. I bought some of her pink motorcycle cards as a thank you for Philippa Hughes of The Pink Line Project. They were a perfect gift.

For Feb. she has made this limited edition book of love letters. Love Letters- features 15 letters from the likes of James Joyce, Albert Einstein, Edith Wharton, Lewis Carroll, Lucrezia Borgia, Allen Ginsburg, George Bernard Shaw, and more–chosen for their wit and originality–and about 20 typefaces. Each letter was set by hand and letterpress printed at Pyramid Atlantic. Then we bound them into a limited-edition 24-page pamphlet. I love paper. I love words. I love fonts. I love history. I love everything about this book, and I promise you it will be something really special.

It’s available at a special pre-sale price for only a week!

TONIGHT!

Don't miss the Lisa Marie and DECOY show TONIGHT!

I've gotten to meet and hang out with so many amazing people this week. Above is Pretty Boy (runner of The Obama Art Report), Nik Harrington, Scot Lefavor and DECOY.

Scot Lefavor, Kelly Towles and Nik Harrington. Three of my most favorite people. They are standing in front of Kelly's installation he did at the Manifest Hope show in DC this past week.

These are my new friends Nik Harrington and Scot Lefavor. They are standing in front of Scot's pieces they brought up from Denver, Colorado. They believe very strongly in the buddy system. They are super fun. Scot also puts up wheat paste!

This one couldn't have came out any better. People were lined up next to it taking pictures ALL weekend.

Scot and Nik are both amazing artist and are still in town from Denver. Look for them tonight at the DCEOY/ Lisa Marie show and welcome them to DC and or talk art.
See you all there!

SO SO SO SO MUCH FUN!

This is what the DCIST said....

Held at the large 3333 M Street NW location in Georgetown, about 100 artists, who won their spot through a contest, will show their political work focused on one of three areas: Health Care Reform, Workers Rights, or The Green Economy. See notable local names such as Tim Conlon, Tim Tate, Decoy, Billy Colbert and Lisa Marie Thalhammer during the opening hours, Saturday through Monday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m."

可愛い- that's kawaii, which is Japanese for "cute."

I have a friend who loves the Japanese language and pop culture. My two attempts at cool Japan related gifts so far have been.
1. A Japanese talking watch. The one i got her was better then these, but similar.

2. The Harajuku Lovers perfumes

Five new fragrances, each with their own scent and style. Choose the girl that best fits your personality. After you get one, you’ll have to get them all!
Inspired by the electric street scene of the Harajuku shopping district in Tokyo, the Harajuku Lovers collection captures the lyrics and iconography from Gwen Stefani’s albums. A fatal attraction to cuteness.

I got her MUSIC
Music: Delicate floral. Sparkling clementine, sweet pea + honeysuckle and creamy vanilla.
By Harajuku Lovers.

But what began this little blog about Japan related things- This Japanese McDonalds ad I found.

Ron English- because I love him.

Make new friends...

I had lunch today at one of my favorite restaurants in DC, Cafe Mozart with one of my favorite people in DC, my best friend RELAX.

Which made me remember singing this song as a child-
Make new friends,
but keep the old.
One is silver,
the other is gold.

A circle is round,
it has no end.
That's how long,
I will be your friend.

A fire burns bright,
it warms the heart.
We've been friends,
from the very start.

You have one hand,
I have the other.
Put them together,
We have each other.

Silver is precious,
Gold is too.
I am precious,
and so are you.

You help me,
and I'll help you
and together
we will see it through.

The sky is blue
The Earth is green
I can help
to keep it clean

Across the land
Across the sea
Friends forever
We will always be

You can buy Kinder EGGS there! I love Kinder Eggs and I grew up with them in Germany, but this ad is insane!
If you ever go, ask if Greg is working.

Katy Daley and Todd Taylor

KATY DALEY
I have been in love with my friend Chris Brown's mom since I met her last year at his birthday party. They live in Georgetown and so I called her yesterday to tell her about two show's I'm having in her area of town. One of the pieces is a painting of her son and another friend playing FIFA.
When I got off the phone Chris started telling me how his mom is a radio personality, and how she hosts a bluegrass/ country radio show daily. AND how she plays the banjo! I knew Mrs. Brown ROCKED the first time I met her. Katy Daley is not her real name. It's her decoy.
My father loves banjos. Once he ordered this mix tape thing through a magazine. He got to pick like ten songs, they put it on the tape for you. He still has that tape. It still works. One of the songs he had chosen for it was Dueling Banjos.
WATCH THIS!

Guinness World Record Todd Taylor Fastest Banjo
Listen to the Katy Daley show- 7 am- 10 am on WAMU
Katy comes to you LIVE from our Washington, D.C. studios every weekday for 3 hours. Katy brings 25+ years of radio experience to celebrate the music through interviews and features such as Musician’s Tips and Gems of Bluegrass. If your taste in bluegrass ranges from the early days right up through the latest releases by today’s artists, this is the program for you.

I went and visited the space. The whole place is a blank canvas! I know Andy myself. He has always been a great supporter of local art. His restaurant Luna was actually the first place to ever show DECOY work in DC. START THINKING ZORA!

Jude Acers

I met Jude Acers on a trip in college to New Orleans. It was a mission of my friend Mitch to find him and play a game of chess. He talked about keys hidden in trees and Janis Joplin staying at his house. He called me the 'cheerleader of chess'.

Manifest Hope jan 17-19th

This is the photo I used to draw the Obama family portrait.

Inspiring brunch with friends leads to Zora Neale Hurston and an afternoon of art.

It's hard for me to explain my love for Jackson Pollock. When I was younger I would watch films of him painting over and over. Read interviews and books. My painting professor in college had met him and hung out on a few occasions and would tell us stories about how he acted and his speech. He had this 'jackson pollock' walk that he would do. My painting professor was a character himself. In his early years he was often called 'the mad diarist'. His real name was Tommy Mew. His paintings were really really good. There was one stored in a teachers lounge in the language building in college. I spent many nights in college where I sat and planned how I could somehow take it and no one ever know. His paintings were HUGE and is why I think I started making such large pieces in the first place. And so...Here's Pollock for good ol times sake...Actually born Paul Jackson Pollock-for those tiny detail art history lovers.

Another oldie but a goodie! Julian Schnabel's BASQUIAT.
I mean..."In 1981, A Nineteen-Year-Old Unknown Graffiti Writer Took The New York Art World By Storm. The Rest Is Art History." PLUS-Jeffrey Wright, Benicio Del Toro, Claire Forlani, David Bowie, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Parker Posey, Courtney Love and the list goes on. HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG? If you have not seen it, this movie is GREAT!

Just to end on a fun note, here's Dali running through Vermeer's Lacemaker.

This painting is actually one of my fathers all time favorites. He has always loved Dutch paintings. He thinks they have real control with the brush.
