FACE-PLANT CUPCAKES

I bought a mustache print and mustache lego pin, but David found this awesome mustache on a stick at crafty bastards.

Even though he hates the fact that I turn everything into a competition, I still think he won in the mustache shopping game.

In other news, an amiga of mine did a mean face-plant today and is recovering.

So I made her these get well cupcakes. Band-aide and bloody face pictured here.

Amiga laid out in road and bike getting hit with lightening bolts pictured here.

GET WELL SOON!

He runs a super fun blog called, My Robot Is Pregnant.

He writes...In 2003 I was selling postcards and poems on 17th and Mission. This was my plea.

In 1996 he kept a journal by typing on gum wrappers and grocery store receipts. Worth seeing, totally Amazing!
And, don't forget, he's also a beekeeper!

Lets start with AWESOME

My friend TAXI GANG is just starting to give me a sneak peak into his parents art collection.

I am a GIANT Calder fan! The Atlanta High Museum is a proud owner of a Calder mobile.

DC is also the proud owner of a Calder sculpture (sculpture garden)

and an AMAZING Calder room at the National Gallery.

A SUPER FUN DC CALDER SCULPTURE SURPRISE!
An amazing Calder mobile is hung in the Hart Senate Office Building. Owel took me to see it once.

Mountains and Clouds
On November 10 1976, Calder brought the Mountains and Clouds maquette—his 20-inch (510 mm) sheet-metal model—to Washington, D.C., to present it to the Architect of the Capitol and finalize the placement of the piece. After making minor adjustments to two of the clouds, he expressed satisfaction with the maquette as positioned in a model of the atrium. This proved to be a final visit: Calder died of a heart attack that night after he returned to New York City.

Before Calder did mobiles, he did CIRCUS things!
This TAXI GANG piece is so fun.

I love when things come together perfectly..."In 1926, Calder moved to Paris...later that fall, Calder began to create his Cirque Calder, a miniature circus fashioned from wire, string, rubber, cloth, and other found objects. Designed to fit into suitcases (it eventually grew to fill five), Calder could travel with his circus and hold performances on both sides of the Atlantic. He gave elaborately improvised shows, recreating the performance of a real circus. Soon, his "Cirque Calder" became popular with the Parisian avant-garde. Some months Calder would charge an entrance fee to pay his rent". -WIKI

NEW PAINTINGS

DECOYland

DESTINO

Alice in DECOYland

My latest, smaller, more 'cartoon' series of paintings will be on display this Sunday at the Art Whino booth, Crafty Bastards DC.

This series is a collection of things i loved as a child from two artist, Salvador Dali and Walt Disney.
I had begun drawing images of Alice in Wonderland for a project of mine. I have always loved quotes from lewis carroll, but had especially been fond of sketches I had seen once on exhibit by Dali. There were drawings after drawings of alice floating along Dali's world, always with a hoop or rope.

The horses in the series are named after Charles Bukowski. Horses have always seemed magical to me. Also because Bukowski hated Mickey Mouse.

And then, Destiny...
DESTINO

Destino is a short animated cartoon released in 2003 by The Walt Disney Company. Destino is unique in that its production originally began in 1945, 58 years before its eventual release. The project was a collaboration between American animator Walt Disney and Spanish painter Salvador Dalí, and features music written by Mexican songwriter Armando Dominguez.

Destino (the Spanish, Portuguese and Italian word for "destiny") was storyboarded by Disney studio artist John Hench and artist Salvador Dalí for eight months in late 1945 and 1946; however, financial concerns caused Disney to cease production. The Walt Disney Company, then Walt Disney Studios, was plagued by many financial woes in the World War II era. Hench compiled a short animation test of about 18 seconds in the hopes of rekindling Disney's interest in the project, but the production was no longer deemed financially viable and put on indefinite hiatus.

In 1999, Walt Disney's nephew Roy Edward Disney, while working on Fantasia 2000, unearthed the dormant project and decided to bring it back to life. Disney Studios France, the company's small Parisian production department, was brought on board to complete the project. The short was produced by Baker Bloodworth and directed by French animator Dominique Monfrey in his first directorial role. A team of approximately 25 animators deciphered Dalí and Hench's cryptic storyboards (with a little help from the journals of Dalí's wife Gala Dalí and guidance from Hench himself), and finished Destino's production. The end result is mostly traditional animation, including Hench's original footage, but it also contains some computer animation. The 18 second original footage that is included in the finished product is the segment with the two tortoises.

The six-minute short follows the love story of Chronos and the ill-fated love he has for a mortal female. The story continues as the female dances through surreal scenery inspired by Dalí's paintings.

Philippa Hughes-DC CUTIE.

Philippa P.B. HugheS, 29 ;)

Art collector and founder of the Pink Line Project

It took just over a year -- a couple of events, really, to hear her tell it -- for Philippa Hughes to emerge in late 2007 as the belle of Washington's arts scene. Neither artist nor gallerist, Hughes is a lawyer and lobbyist-turned-art-collector who has imbued Washington's art scene with a New York-style cool by using a deceptively simple idea: host visual and performance artists in edgy, vacant storefront spaces or at home; hang a screen, show projection art, get a DJ, set up a bar and wait for the hipsters to arrive. Her blog, Hoogrrl.com, and the Web site for her arts-support organization, the Pink Line Project (Pinkline.org), both muse about art, pass on news and promote Washington events with similar vibes (and the number of such events has only grown since Hughes moved here from her native Richmond several years ago). She hosts invite-only salons for creative types in her 1,000-square foot condo with a giant deck on 14th Street NW and doesn't seem to have a day job, per se -- she cites "good investments" and other factors. She calls herself an "arts activist." Her name attached to an ever-growing list of bashes, Hughes plans to narrow her focus to launching a group for art collectors to remove some of the mystery around buying and supporting art: "I'm going to step back and define."- Washington Post

If it was my own personal poll, It would have been "top ten cutest people in DC".
How can you hate anything pink? LOVE HER.

BEPPI and LIZZI

This is a painting by Beppi. I love this piece because of the pigeons and because it deals with Lizzi Borden.

"Lizzie's Pigeons" -
acrylic painting. The
story goes that Lizzie
Borden's father killed
all of her pet pigeons at
the behest of her
stepmother. Lizzie got
revenge. This piece has
a compcnion piece.

Lizzie Andrew Borden (July 19, 1860 – June 1, 1927) was a New England spinster who was the central figure in the hatchet murders of her father and stepmother on August 4, 1892 in Fall River, Massachusetts in the United States. The slayings, subsequent trial, and the following trial by media became a cause célèbre. The fame of the incident has endured in American pop culture and criminology. Although Lizzie Borden was acquitted, she was widely believed to be guilty; no one else was ever arrested or tried, and she has remained notorious in American folklore. Dispute over the identity of the killer or killers continues to this day.

motive:
Over a period of years after the death of the first Mrs. Borden, life at 92 Second Street had grown unpleasant in many ways, and affection between the older and younger family members had waned considerably if any was present at all. The upstairs floor of the house was divided. The front was the territory of the Borden sisters, while the rear was for Mr. and Mrs. Borden. Meals were not always taken together. Conflict had come to a head between the two daughters and their father about his decision to divide up valuable property among relatives before his death. A house had been turned over to relatives of their stepmother, and John Morse, brother to the deceased Sarah Borden (the mother of the Borden daughters), had come to visit that week. His visit was to facilitate transfer of farm property, which included what had been a summer home for the Borden daughters. Shortly before the murders, a heated argument had taken place which resulted in both sisters leaving home on extended "vacations." Lizzie Borden, however, decided to cut her trip short and returned early.
She was refused the opportunity to purchase prussic acid by a local druggist, which she claimed was for cleaning a seal skin coat.
Shortly before the murders, the entire household became violently ill. As Mr. Borden was not a popular man in town, Mrs. Borden feared they were being poisoned, but the family doctor diagnosed it as bad food.

Trial:
During the police investigation, a hatchet was found in the basement and was assumed to be the murder weapon, but the prosecution was hampered by the fact that the Fall River police did not put credence in the new forensic technology of fingerprinting, and refused to take prints on the hatchet.

No blood-soaked clothing was found as evidence by police. A few days after the murder, Borden tore apart and burned a light blue Bedford cord cotton dress in the kitchen stove, claiming she had brushed against fresh baseboard paint which had smeared on it.

Lizzie Borden was acquitted by a jury after an hour and a half's deliberation.

Theories:
Several theories have been presented over the years suggesting Lizzie Borden may not have committed the murders, and that other suspects may have had possible motives. One theory was that any number of townspeople could have carried out a grudge against Mr. or Mrs. Borden. Another theory is that the maid, Bridget Sullivan, did it, possibly out of outrage for being asked to clean the windows, a taxing job on a hot day, just a day after having suffered from food poisoning. Another potential culprit was forwarded by Arnold R. Brown in his work, Lizzie Borden: The Legend, The Truth, The Final Chapter, in which Brown theorizes that the true culprit was an illegitimate paternal half-brother named William Borden, as a revenge killing in his failed efforts to extort money from his father.
Yet another theory is that Borden suffered petit mal epileptic seizures during her menstrual cycle, at which times she entered a dream-like state, and unknowingly committed the murders then.

PLUS the most fun thing of it all:
The house on Second Street where the murders occurred is now a bed and breakfast!

A few years ago Doug and I traveled to Iceland to tour around with Sigur Ros. They were ending a huge tour with a few small Thank You shows in Iceland. To hear them play live in Iceland, sometimes in these amazing open spaces at sunset and such was unbelievable. During it all they were filming a documentary, which made it even more fun. Amazing experience.

Berry College

This is super fun news to me because I went to Berry. Not only is it the largest campus in the world land wise and have over 88 miles of mountain biking trails ON CAMPUS...but it also has....

Veterinarians at a north Georgia college have been treating an odd-looking deer after it was attacked by a dog.

The deer, according to vets at Berry College, has six legs and was found over the weekend near Rome. The animal is recovering from wounds it suffered in the attack.

Vets believe the deer should be kept in captivity.

Due to the injuries, one of its two tails had to be amputated. The fawn has two distinct pelvises and uses one leg from each pelvis to walk.

Atlanta television WSB said the six-legged creature could be sent to the University of Georgia to be studied.
