In Memory of Jeanne-Claude

Jeanne-Claude, 74, American artist and resident of New York City, died suddenly November 18, 2009 as a result of of complications due to a ruptured brain aneurysm.

Christo is deeply saddened by the passing of his wife, partner and collaborator and is committed to honor the promise they made to each other many years ago: The art of Christo and Jeanne-Claude will continue.

Christo is dedicated to completing their current works in progress: Over The River, Project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado, and The Mastaba, Project for the United Arab Emirates, as Jeanne-Claude would wish.

Christo and Jeanne-Claude met in Paris, France in November, 1958, sharing the same date of birth and have worked together for 51 years creating temporary works of art.

It is Jeanne-Claude's wish that her body be donated to scientific research.

A memorial will be announced at a later date. Christo requests that flowers not be sent. Memorial gifts may be made to the charity of your choice.
Read an old post here, about a letter I found at the Chelsea Hotel from Jeanne- Claude about a piece of theirs at the Hirshhorn!

L. A. Abbott

One of the most fun things about doing murals in other neighborhoods, is getting to meet the people who live there. Getting to meet everyone around Sherman and Barry was amazing! What an up lifting and kind neighborhood. L. A. Abbott is a grad student at Howard studying film. We met at the wall, and he even ended coming out to film the Monster Jam in NJ on halloween. Good times. Good times.

Thanks for the photos Mr. Abbott!

Destination: Journey.

Fun nights with RELAX.

Mothertongue Celebrates 11 Years of DC Women’s Spokenword with Silvana Straw, Michelle Parkerson and Maureen Andary

I am a huge fan of Mothertongue and of Maureen, so I bet you this event will be amazing!

Washingtonian Maureen Andary (www.maureenmusic.com) developed her writing style over her years at NYU earning a degree in Literature with a concentration in Creative Writing (Poetry). Having traversed genres, her 2008 debut album, Nostalgia, was funded through a Young Emerging Artist Grant from the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities. She is also a member of folk/pop duo The Sweater Set (www.thesweaterset.com) which has performed at the Shakespeare Theatre's Harman Center for the Arts, the Arts on Foot Festival, the Fort Reno Summer Concert Series, and many more venues throughout town. Chor Boogie

In the past year, Chor Boogie has gotten to paint and know a lot of local painters and children from dc. He worked on the summer mural in Edgewood and most recently at the Sherman and Berry mural. It's a great honor for me to get to paint with him, and I am so glad some of the kids from DC have gotten the chance to work with him. Too bad this show isn't here, but if you live in cali- check it out.

Internationally acclaimed virtuoso of spray-paint Chor Boogie presents his solo show:
THE BEAUTY OF SIMPLICITY with the "Boogie Birds"
Viewers often find it nearly unbelievable that his masterful works are created
almost solely from spray-paint. His work is purely legal, spiritual
and he creates original pieces with very bold colors. The artist uses
an inverted-can technique to get the intricacies of small details
and the colors he selects are meant to be therapeutic.

DECOY's Photo party pick!

It's back! Photo week in DC! Our annual competition received over 3500 amazing entries from 39 states and 28 countries. As for the rest of the celebration, now just around the corner, it's going to be even bigger and better this year, filled with powerful international exhibitions, thought provoking lectures, and, of course, the chance to have your own portfolio critiqued by experts. In short, FotoWeek DC - a non-profit organization - has planned a total photographic immersion, featuring the latest in documentary, fine art, and every genre of photography - and feel free to overindulge, because most of these events are free.

The date is November 7th - 14th and the place is all around the city, from our nation's prestigious museums and institutions to embassies, cutting edge galleries, and even public schools. So browse on to find out more about our schedule -- and start planning yours.

I know it's a little difficult to pick which photo events to go to. So here's my photo pick!

My great friend A.J. is showing some of his amazing photography.

Wilhelm's exhibition focuses on young men in Kabul who are living as homeless opium addicts in a structure built by the Russians to house operas, ballets and music concerts. The building was decimated during tribal fighting of the Afghan civil war and sometimes shelters as many as 400 addicts. Most of these men have the same story of addiction--they snuck into Iran to work in fields or weave carpets or do other back-breaking labor and became addicted when they started smoking opium to ease their physical pains. Deportation inevitably forces them back to Afghanistan where they travel to Kabul desperate as full blown addicts begging and stealing to buy more opium. There isn't much hope or help and many health officials fear that more addicts will start using the drug intravenously as eradication efforts threaten to drive up the street price.

AJ Wilhelm is a New York City-based photographer and filmmaker whose work has been published by New York Magazine, The FADER, Playboy España, L'espresso (Italy), Vacature Magazine (Belgium), Washington Post, National Geographic Books, Punk Magazine, Wine Spectator, and others. Born and raised in the midwest, AJ is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
